Elkhorn Creek Report

I went fishing yesterday. I put in at Knight’s Bridge and fished down to Canoe Ky. The creek was very clear, with a flow of 150 to 190 cfs. The flow was where I like it. It lets me fish at the pace I like ,but also is high enough to not hit a lot of rocks. To be honest the fishing was a little better than terrible. I saw plenty of big fish but couldn’t get them to hit. I tried crankbaits, flukes and even tubes. Flukes and crankbaits were the best by far. The fish just wouldn’t hit hard and this caused me to loss a lot of fish, more than I boated. The fish were in fast water that had to be a foot deep or more. There were a few above and below the rapids. I just had to cover a lot of water till I found a fish that was in the mood to eat. On top of the bad bite I got hung up more than I ever have in Elkhorn. I don’t know how I did it, but I hooked so many rocks that it became very frustrating. I do mean hooked in a rock not between them. Most of my fish were dinks with several nice fish. I don’t know where the 10 to 12 inch fish where. Since it is fall there are a lot of leaves on the water and that was a problem. It seemed that if there was a floating leaf any where near where I cast I would hook it. I finished the day with only 26 bass one was a largemouth. I had expected a much better day. You would think they would be feeding better with a drop in the water temperature. It still beat a day at work. Till the next post hope to see you on the water.

Stoner Creek Report

Made a last minute decision to run down to Frymans. I got there about 1pm. I motored up into Stroge Creek. The water was very clear, 74 degrees. There was a lot of leaves on the water that caused a few problems. The fish were very spooky. I had to make long cast to get them to hit. I was using a shallow crankbait about 2 inches long in shad color.  The fish were like usual very scattered. The good thing was when you did get a hit they were attacking it. There were times when I would make a cast and see a vee in the water headed toward my bait. I would just twitch it and the water would explode. The largemouths were running a little smaller than the last couple of trips. Most were in the 10 to 13 inch range. I did catch several nice smallmouths. 1 was over 16 inches. I thought I was going to have a great day till my wife called and asked about our dinner date, which I had forgot about. Luckly she called about 3:30 and I was able to make it home in time. I fished for 3.5 hours and caught 30 bass. The fish are biting and it seemed that the later in the day the bite got better. Till the next report hope to see you on the water.

Kentucky Bass Fishing

One of my Retired Police buddies called me and wanted to go fishing. If you know me he had to really force me to go. The only problem was I only had about 5 hours I could go due to a evening meeting I had to be at. We decided to go to the private lake I go to. We started fishing at about 11 am and we quit at 4 pm. To my surprise the bass were in shallow water we never caught a fish deeper than 3 feet. Most were in 18 inches or less. This was the first time Robby had been fishing in about 3 years, so after about 2 hours he was winning about his wrist hurting. I will say he never quit fishing. The fish were hitting shallow crankbaits, but you had to rip them in the water. (crank them very fast) We finished the trip with Robby catching 21 bass and the biggest fish, about 2.5 lbs. I caught 52 bass and lose the biggest bass over 3 lbs. All I can say is the fish are biting so get on the water if you can. Till the next report hope to see you on the water.
