Lake St Clair Report

I just got back from my second trip to Lake St Clair this Spring with my best friend Dr Jack. First I must say that the weather for the 4 days we were there were the best 4 days I have had in a row there ever. The temperature was 68 to 77 and mostly sunny and very little wind.  The water temperature was a low of 56 to a high of 72 degrees. When we got there we found that they had just received over 4 inches of rain and parts of the lake was muddy and the lake was up over a foot. To say that the bite was terrible would be a under statement. We found plenty of fish but couldn’t get them to bite well. They would hit a bait but wouldn’t hold on. You could see them hit the tail of plastics or just slap at the bait. We caught several fish by hooking them on the outside of the mouth.. I’m not saying we didn’t catch fish but I would have rather caught the fish that we missed than the ones we caught.  We tried every thing in the boat. Flukes, craws, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, grubs, buzzbaits and spoons. We caught some fish on every thing but never found a pattern. I was very disappointed for Jack. This was his first trip to St Clair. Of the fish we caught we never caught a fish under 2 1/2 lbs and the biggest was 4 lbs 4 ozs. Jack only caught 26 and I only caught 68. Jack fell in love with hooking a 3 lb smallie. He said that they were hardest fighting fresh water fish he had every caught. The only thing I can guess that caused a problem was the falling water.  We both agreed that we had a great time, just wish we had caught more fish. If you like to catch smallies Lake St Clair has to be one of the best places to catch them along with the New River in WV. Till the next post hope to see you on the water.
